Match the product structure to the production boundary
Odoo's referenced BOM documentation covers components applicable to variants and production operations. ERPNext's BOM and work-order documentation covers multilevel structures, operations and job cards. Use these documented models to explore different designs for the same product family rather than counting menus. Prepare one attribute that changes materials and another that changes work. Ask the internal product owner to add an option and show how the resulting structure reaches a production order. Then issue more material than expected and receive only part of the output. ERPNext documents source, WIP, target and scrap warehouse roles, which gives its implementer a specific boundary to explain. Ask the Odoo team to show the equivalent proposed material and unfinished-work model. Neither terminology nor record count establishes better control. The important question is whether the people managing physical material and accounting can reconcile what remains unfinished without inventing a second meaning for a generic warehouse balance. Have a second administrator follow the handover instructions without the original developer. That tests whether useful technical control has actually transferred to the organization rather than remaining implicit in the implementation team's knowledge.[Odoo 1][ERPNext 1][ERPNext 2]
Compare controlled change, not only editable BOMs
Odoo's PLM documentation describes engineering change orders and review before applying a revised BOM. The Odoo sources in these dossiers are master documentation, so verify the behavior in the purchased release. ERPNext's cited sources establish BOM and work-order records; they do not settle every desired engineering approval behavior. Ask both teams to demonstrate a rejected change, a corrected approval and the disposition of work already started. Accept a clearly designed extension or procedure only after its owner and maintenance burden are visible. Do not convert a gap in these sources into a claim that a feature is missing. Retain the old instructions, new instructions, affected orders and authorized decision. Then have an ordinary supervisor retrieve the applicable version for a partly built unit. An editable product structure is useful, but it is not by itself evidence that engineering intent and shop instructions remain aligned through exceptions.[Odoo 2][ERPNext 1][ERPNext 2]
Evaluate the ownership model as part of the software
For each proposal, write down edition, installed apps, version, hosting operator and custom modules. Ask who handles platform updates, application changes, backups, restoration, permissions and integrations. These are original procurement checks rather than comparative claims about default service levels. Rehearse an upgrade of the most consequential customization in a test environment, then restore it and reconcile a representative production transaction. Include local finance outputs and period corrections in acceptance instead of treating an open-source codebase as evidence of jurisdictional suitability. A team with internal technical capacity may make different tradeoffs from one relying completely on a partner, even when both select the same product. Price the responsibilities that remain with the buyer, including maintaining variant rules, job reporting and regression tests. The decision should identify the complete service chain and how it continues when a developer or partner changes. Source access provides options; accountable ownership makes those options operationally usable.
Questions that separate the proposals
Which release and apps were demonstrated?
Master documentation may differ from the purchased baseline.
What does WIP mean in this design?
Location and unfinished-value control must agree.
Who maintains change approval?
A procedure or extension has recurring work.
Can another operator maintain the stack?
Continuity should survive a partner or developer change.
Run the same comparative scenario
BUYER-CONTROLLED DEMONSTRATION
A variant revision during partial production
Illustrative pilot: a multilevel product changes after some material has been issued.
Proposed evaluation scenario. It is not a reported product test or customer result.- 01
Build two variants in the proposed baseline.
Evidence to retain: Save versions, apps and resulting structures.
- 02
Issue excess material and receive partial output.
Evidence to retain: Reconcile source, WIP, finished and scrap quantities.
- 03
Reject, revise and approve a BOM change.
Evidence to retain: Retain effective instructions and affected-order disposition.
- 04
Upgrade or restore the configured test environment.
Evidence to retain: Repeat the flow and record support ownership.
App breadth and source availability cannot rank these implementations. The choice depends on a verified version, workable change control and the service responsibilities the buyer can sustain.
